Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has designated Nantucket Barrier Beach and Wildlife Refuge in Massachusetts as a National Natural Landmark. This recognition highlights the site's ecological diversity and unique coastal features.

National Natural Landmarks aim to conserve areas with notable biological and geological resources. These sites are selected by the Secretary of the Interior based on their condition, rarity, diversity, and scientific value. The National Park Service collaborates with landowners and partners to promote conservation efforts.

"National Natural Landmarks are a key component of the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to supporting locally led conservation efforts," stated Secretary Deb Haaland. "The Nantucket Barrier Beach and Wildlife Refuge holds immense value to scientists and nature lovers alike, and its designation as a National Natural Landmark will help to preserve and protect this unique ecological diversity for generations to come."

National Park Service Director Chuck Sams commented on the significance of these landmarks: "National Natural Landmarks shine a light on outstanding examples of our nation’s natural heritage. And in the case of Nantucket Barrier Beach and Wildlife Refuge, the designation recognizes an area that is not only scenic but also teaches us so much."

Nantucket Barrier Beach features coastlines that change over time due to its unique geology. The sand formations result from Nantucket Harbor's orientation along with glacial deposits from over 20,000 years ago. This creates a rare geologic feature that aids in understanding coastal ecology.

The site is managed by The Trustees of Reservations, Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. With this latest addition, there are now 606 National Natural Landmarks across the United States.
