U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced that a federal jury has found Khaled Abughanem, 52, and Adham Abughanem, 28, guilty of conspiracy to kidnap a person in a foreign country and kidnapping conspiracy. Both men face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Khaled Abughanem was also convicted of threatening to retaliate against a victim.

The prosecution team, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Charles M. Kruly and Maeve E. Huggins, detailed the events starting on September 8, 2021, when the defendants traveled from Buffalo, NY to Guadalajara, Mexico with the intent to kidnap Victim 1—Khaled's daughter and Adham's sister. Between September 10, 2021, and April 6, 2023, they conspired to transport her from New York to Cairo and then Sanaa, Yemen. She was held for about 16 months with plans for her marriage against her will.

On March 14, 2023, Khaled Abughanem threatened Victim 1 with violence as retaliation for providing information to law enforcement about their criminal activities.

U.S. Attorney Ross commented on the verdict: “This verdict brings to an end a difficult time for the victim... These defendants are being held accountable because of the courage of this victim and the unwavering dedication of the investigators and prosecutors on this case.”

Matthew Miraglia from the FBI’s Buffalo Field Office emphasized their commitment: “The FBI prioritizes the protection of civil rights and safety of American citizens.” He credited strong investigative work by various agencies for today's outcome.

Greg Anderson from DSS highlighted collaboration among agencies: “The Diplomatic Security Service would like to recognize...the close collaboration between DSS...and local law enforcement agencies.”

The investigation involved efforts by multiple agencies including the FBI under Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia's direction and DSS under Protective Intelligence Investigations Director Greg Anderson.

Sentencing is set for June 17, 2025 before Judge John L. Sinatra Jr., who oversaw the trial proceedings.
