The United States has expressed strong disapproval of recent actions taken by the Hong Kong government. The issuance of new arrest warrants and bounties against six overseas democracy activists, along with the cancellation of passports for seven other activists, including some residing in the United States, has been condemned. "We reject the Hong Kong government’s efforts to intimidate and silence individuals who choose to make the United States their home," stated a spokesperson.
The U.S. maintains its commitment to advocating for those targeted for exercising their right to freedom of expression. The application of Hong Kong's national security laws beyond its borders is seen as transnational repression that threatens U.S. sovereignty and global human rights. These actions highlight a disregard by Hong Kong authorities for international norms and fundamental freedoms.
"We call on the Hong Kong government to stop using its national security laws to silence dissent," urged the spokesperson.
