Attorney General Merrick B. Garland has announced the recipients of the Seventh Annual Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing. Among those honored from the Middle District of Florida are Detective Matthew Newbold from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and Officer Stephen Malandro, Officer Trevor Stamper, and Specialist Todd Nutbrown from the Largo Police Department.
The award acknowledges law enforcement officers who show exceptional dedication to building trust, engaging with communities, and enhancing public safety. "Community policing is essential to building trust and ensuring public safety," stated Attorney General Garland. "These officers have gone above and beyond their duty to foster partnerships with the communities they serve."
Detective Matthew Newbold was recognized for his work in solving a cold case that had remained unsolved for 36 years. His commitment over 24 years has brought justice to many victims and families in his community.
Officers Malandro, Stamper, and Specialist Nutbrown were honored for their efforts in transforming the lives of over 500 individuals experiencing homelessness through creative solutions such as partnering with shelters and drafting new ordinances.
U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg remarked on their achievements: “Working collaboratively with communities to address concerns and reduce crime is the cornerstone of effective policing.”
The award recognizes state, local, and Tribal sworn officers for their efforts in community policing across three areas: criminal investigations, field operations, or innovations in community policing. The recipients were chosen from a nationwide pool of nominees.
