Hartford man pleads guilty to meth trafficking charges

Godfrey Smith, also known as "Mike" and "Mikey," has pleaded guilty to a methamphetamine trafficking charge in Bridgeport federal court. Vanessa Roberts Avery, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, made the announcement.

Court documents reveal that in April 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Hartford Task Force and Middletown Police Department conducted a controlled purchase of approximately 53 grams of crystal methamphetamine from an individual in Middletown. During this transaction, investigators identified Smith as the source of the drugs. On August 22, 2024, another controlled purchase was made involving approximately 240 grams of crystal methamphetamine from Smith in Hartford.

Smith was arrested on September 4, 2024, following a federal criminal complaint. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement seized about 27 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 44 grams of cocaine, 32 grams of crack cocaine, $3,200 in cash, and a box of .45 caliber ammunition from him.

Smith admitted guilt to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of five grams or more of methamphetamine. This offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could lead to a maximum sentence of up to 40 years. U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny will sentence Smith on February 28 in Hartford.

Smith is currently released on a $100,000 bond pending sentencing.

The DEA's Hartford Task Force includes personnel from various local police departments along with the DEA Hartford Resident Office and the Connecticut State Police. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also assisted in the investigation.
