U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett | U.S. Department of Justice
A Louisville man has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for his involvement in drug trafficking and illegal possession of a machine gun. Tyrone Bunzy Jr., 26, was convicted for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and heroin, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and illegal possession of a Glock Switch Device. This device allows a semi-automatic handgun to operate as an automatic weapon, classifying it as a machine gun under federal law.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky, along with Special Agent in Charge Jim Scott of the DEA Louisville Field Division and Special Agent in Charge R. Shawn Morrow of the ATF Louisville Field Division.
Court documents reveal that Bunzy will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. It is important to note that there is no parole in the federal system.
The investigation was conducted by the DEA and ATF, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Ansari prosecuted the case.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched an enhanced violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, which emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
