Lauren Sherman, a 32-year-old resident of Winnebago, Nebraska, has been sentenced for child abuse in Indian Country. The sentencing took place on November 22, 2024, in federal court in Omaha, Nebraska. Chief United States District Court Judge Robert F. Rossiter Jr. handed down a sentence of 15 months' imprisonment to Sherman. Following her release from prison, she will serve a one-year term of supervised release.

The incident occurred in March 2023 when Sherman intentionally assaulted a minor child. The child's bruising was noticed at school and subsequent investigations confirmed that the bruises were due to Sherman's physical assault.

The case was tried in federal court because it involved a felony offense on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into this matter.

United States Attorney Susan Lehr made the announcement regarding Sherman's sentencing.
