Former school clerk pleads guilty to theft of federal funds

Rebecca Deanne Morehead, 53, of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, has pleaded guilty to theft or bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds. The announcement was made by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

According to the indictment, Morehead embezzled over $5,000 from the Hulbert Public School District between June 2019 and October 26, 2021. At that time, she was serving as the district encumbrance clerk.

The case was investigated by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Education's Office of Inspector General (OIG).

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson accepted Morehead's plea in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. A presentence investigation report has been ordered. Meanwhile, Morehead is released on a personal recognizance bond until sentencing.

The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kara Traster and Joshua Satter.
