Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the recipients of the Seventh Annual Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing, recognizing Detective Tyler Norman of the Salt Lake City Police Department among others.
The award honors law enforcement officers who demonstrate dedication to building trust, engaging with communities, and enhancing public safety. "Community policing is essential to building trust and ensuring public safety," said Attorney General Garland. "These officers have gone above and beyond their duty to foster partnerships with the communities they serve. Their work is an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the profound impact law enforcement can have on individuals, neighborhoods, and society."
Detective Norman's efforts have significantly disrupted gang activity in his area. His work has led to numerous arrests of violent street gang members and seizures of firearms and narcotics, strengthening public safety in the region.
U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah praised Detective Norman: “I want to thank Detective Norman for his outstanding and selfless work to protect our citizens and keep the community safe,” she said. “Congratulations on this prestigious achievement.”
The award recognizes individual state, local, and Tribal sworn officers for exceptional community policing efforts in criminal investigations, field operations, or innovations in community policing. Recipients were chosen from nominees nationwide for their achievements in fostering safer communities.
The Department of Justice commends these officers for their service and commitment to their communities.
