A Marion man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. James Carl Morgan, 42, was sentenced on November 21, 2024, following his guilty plea in June of the same year.
Morgan admitted to knowingly possessing a Canik TP9 SF, 9x19mm caliber pistol on June 6, 2023. The incident occurred when police officers attempted to arrest him at a Cedar Rapids motel for a previous warrant related to firearm possession as a felon from 2022. During the arrest attempt, Morgan tried to escape through a window but returned inside upon encountering a police dog. Officers later found the loaded handgun with an extended magazine near the window.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence of 46 months imprisonment and imposed an additional three-year term of supervised release following his prison time. In the federal system, parole is not available.
Currently held by the United States Marshal's custody, Morgan will be transported to a federal prison.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt prosecuted the case which was investigated by both the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, this strategy focuses on building community trust and legitimacy while supporting organizations that work towards violence prevention.
