A former officer of the Jackson Police Department has admitted guilt in making a false statement to a firearms dealer. Torrence Donnell Mayfield, aged 53 and residing in Jackson, confessed to purchasing a firearm for another individual on October 26, 2021. The transaction occurred at a pawn shop that holds a Federal Firearms License. During the purchase process, Mayfield filled out a form indicating he was buying the firearm for himself, which was untrue. Federal law prohibits making false statements to acquire firearms.
Mayfield's sentencing is set for March 4, 2025. He could face up to ten years in prison. A federal district court judge will decide the sentence based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Robert A. Eikhoff of the FBI.
The FBI is leading the investigation into this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Herbert S. Carraway and Charles W. Kirkham handling prosecution duties.
