Biden announces new protections against offshore oil drilling

President Joe Biden has announced measures to protect the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska’s Northern Bering Sea from oil and natural gas drilling. He stated that these actions are necessary to prevent irreversible damage to cherished coastal areas and are not required for meeting the nation's energy needs.

Biden emphasized the importance of safeguarding these regions as part of a transition to a clean energy economy. "It is not worth the risks," he said, noting that both Republican and Democratic governors, members of Congress, and coastal communities have called for increased protection against offshore drilling. In Alaska, several tribes have advocated for preserving the Northern Bering Sea's ecosystem.

The President referenced the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as a stark reminder of offshore drilling's potential dangers. This incident highlighted the need for legal protections being enacted now. Under his administration, Biden claims that offshore safety standards have been strengthened, and efforts toward cleaner energy sources accelerated with eleven offshore wind projects approved.

Since taking office, Biden asserts that he has pursued an ambitious climate agenda. Over four years, more than 670 million acres of land and water have been conserved in collaboration with local stakeholders such as tribes, farmers, ranchers, fishermen, small businesses, and outdoor enthusiasts. This effort aligns with his "America the Beautiful" initiative aimed at conserving 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.

Biden concluded by rejecting what he termed "false choices" between environmental protection and economic growth or between ocean health and low energy prices. He argued that protecting America's coasts will benefit communities and the economy long-term.
