President Joe Biden extended his greetings to Orthodox Christians worldwide as they celebrate Christmas. In a statement, he and First Lady Jill Biden expressed their "warmest greetings for a day of joy and reflection." They acknowledged the significance of the holiday, joining Orthodox Christians in "giving thanks for the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ and the hope and love He brought to our world."
The President also highlighted the plight of Orthodox Christians facing challenges globally. "Today, we pray for Orthodox Christians who are suffering around the world due to war, conflict, deprivation, and oppression," he stated. Emphasizing the universal dignity of all people, he affirmed that "they, like all human beings, are created in the image of God, and deserve safety and security, dignity and respect."
Biden reiterated his administration's commitment to advocating for core principles such as religious freedom. On this occasion, he noted that these communities remain close to their hearts.
Reflecting on scripture, Biden cited: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” He praised Orthodox Christians for their role in bringing "hope and healing to countless communities here at home and around the world." Expressing gratitude for their contributions, he joined fellow Christians in prayers for peace and justice in the coming year.
