For the past two years, Markenzy Lapointe has served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. In a recent announcement, he stated his resignation will be effective on January 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve as United States Attorney," Lapointe expressed. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities of his position with "vigor, determination, commitment, thoughtfulness, and humility."
Lapointe shared insights into his personal history, highlighting his roots in Haiti—a country facing governmental challenges—and his upbringing in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood. He noted the significance of holding a role central to the Department of Justice’s mission and its focus on upholding the rule of law.
Reflecting on his tenure, Lapointe appreciated working with "talented lawyers and professional staff" from the United States Attorney’s Office and partner agencies across federal, state, local, and tribal levels. He praised these public servants for their dedication to safeguarding communities and institutions.
He extended gratitude towards President Joseph R. Biden, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Senator Marco Rubio, Senator Rick Scott, among others for their support during his term. "To all of them," he said, "thank you for trusting me to fulfill the duties of United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida."
