A Poplar man, Brandon Lee Romero, has been sentenced to 57 months in prison following his admission of guilt in a robbery case. The incident involved carjacking a truck and stabbing the driver on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich announced the sentencing, which includes three years of supervised release.
Romero, aged 30, entered a guilty plea to robbery charges in August 2024. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris oversaw the proceedings.
Court documents reveal that on April 14, 2023, John Doe was contacted by his sister to pick up Romero and drive him away from her residence using his father's truck. During the ride to Poplar on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Romero exited the vehicle and brandished two knives. As John Doe attempted to escape by driving away, Romero leaped into the truck bed, kicked out the back window, climbed inside, and stabbed him. Afterward, John Doe left the vehicle and Romero took control of it.
Romero drove the stolen truck into Williams County near Williston, North Dakota. He was apprehended later that day after engaging law enforcement in a high-speed chase. To evade capture, he drove into a ditch to avoid spike strips set by police officers and submerged the vehicle in a creek before fleeing on foot until surrendering.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office with investigations conducted by Fort Peck Law Enforcement Services, Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office, and Williston Police Department.
