Dalia Ayoub expressed gratitude to Dr. Salaam for his service in the Air Force and as a civil rights leader. She highlighted the importance of diversity in strengthening both the military and society. "Your words, principles, and perspectives are as inspiring as they are important—the great value of diversity and diverse perspectives in strengthening the military, in strengthening society, in making our awesome country even stronger by drawing on the strength of all our people," she stated.

The event featured contributions from Shereef Elnahal and other panel members who shared their stories. Appreciation was also extended to Nathan Maenle, Sammy Cuevas, the planning committee, and the production team for organizing the event.

A story about Chaplain Omer Yigiter was shared during the celebration. Omer moved from Central Turkey to Brooklyn after being selected for a US green card. He became active in his community by working as a counselor while studying English and volunteering at Riker's Island as a Muslim chaplain.

At Riker's Island, Omer encountered American Veterans which changed his life's path. The facility had recently opened a tier dedicated to Veterans in custody where they received specialized counseling and attended resource fairs tailored to their experiences.

Omer began working with Muslim Veterans at Riker's Island, supporting them through difficult times. His great-grandfather's service in the Turkish military resonated with him when he met these American Vets. "The word service has multiple meanings in my culture and in my faith tradition," said Omer. "One of the best ways to serve God is to serve his creation … this informs my day-to-day activities and my faith practice."

Afterward, Omer pursued further education to become a full-time chaplain at Northport VA Medical Center where he serves all of VISN-2 as one of only four Muslim VA chaplains nationwide. Many Muslim Veterans find empowerment knowing that someone like Omer is available for spiritual support.

Omer reflects on his work using a quote from Rumi: “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” His dedication continues to inspire those around him.

The event emphasized learning from such stories to ensure that Muslim American Veterans' experiences are acknowledged and honored authentically within VA communities.

"To our Muslim Veterans and colleagues," it was stated during closing remarks, "your unique perspectives make VA stronger. You make America stronger."
