Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce has announced an initiative to expand its support for American companies vying for significant investment and concession projects overseas. This effort aims to counteract increasing competition from strategic adversaries in foreign markets and respond to industry calls for additional tools against unfair competition.
The expansion of the Advocacy Center services is intended to assist eligible U.S. businesses in securing contracts in major foreign government projects across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and critical minerals and metals mining. "This project represents a bold new step in how the Department of Commerce levels the playing field for U.S. businesses and strengthens American leadership worldwide," stated U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. She added that this move aligns with strategic priorities, aiming to bolster economic benefits domestically through increased jobs, a stronger industrial base, and more resilient supply chains.
Since 1993, the Advocacy Center has coordinated efforts to help American firms secure international procurement contracts, essential for export-driven economic growth. In Fiscal Year 2024 alone, it assisted U.S. companies in winning contracts valued at $72.6 billion, supporting approximately 300,000 jobs.
The Biden-Harris Administration emphasizes creating opportunities for American enterprises in sectors vital to global economic development through this expanded advocacy service. The Department of Commerce's Advocacy Center seeks to enhance U.S. competitiveness abroad by boosting export opportunities and positioning American companies favorably in an evolving international market.
