U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Hairston | U.S. Department of Justice
The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of North Carolina, led by Sandra J. Hairston, held its second annual human trafficking simulation event in Greensboro. The initiative was organized in collaboration with The Human Trafficking Resource Center and the Lexington Police Department. It aimed to educate community members, law enforcement, and service organizations about human trafficking warning signs and provide victim resources.
This event is part of the Department of Justice's efforts to mark National Human Trafficking Awareness Month every January. This year’s simulation allowed participants to understand better what it feels like to be a victim of human trafficking. Despite adverse weather conditions, around 35 individuals from across the state attended, including representatives from NGOs, churches, medical providers, law enforcement agencies, analysts, and victims' services.
Participants had opportunities to discuss with prosecutors and law enforcement officials the governmental response to human trafficking and available resources. "The exploitation of human beings for profit has no place in any society," stated United States Attorney Hairston. She emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in identifying cases and preventing human trafficking.
For those affected by human trafficking or who know someone who is, assistance is available through the National Human Trafficking Hotline. They offer free and confidential support 24/7 via phone at 1-888-373-7888 or text HELP to 233733 (BEFREE). In emergencies, individuals are urged to call 911.
