President Joe Biden has announced that the next two Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be named after former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The future USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and the future USS George W. Bush (CVN 83) are set to begin construction in the coming years.
President Biden shared that both former presidents were "deeply humbled" upon receiving the news, acknowledging their understanding of the responsibilities of being Commander-in-Chief and supporting military families.
The new carriers will join a Navy described by President Biden as "the most capable, flexible, and professional" ever assembled. They will be manned by sailors from across the United States who will operate these vessels to protect national interests overseas and ensure safety at home.
Biden emphasized the dedication of these sailors, stating they would demonstrate not only military power but also serve as an example of American values. He expressed gratitude towards them, their families, and the shipyard workers responsible for constructing these ships.
He concluded with a prayer for protection over all who serve aboard these new carriers and throughout the fleet, extending blessings to all troops.
