HUD allocates $72 million for national youth homelessness prevention

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced the availability of $72 million in funding through its Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP). This initiative aims to support up to 25 communities across the nation in developing coordinated approaches to prevent and end youth homelessness by creating housing and supportive services.

"Through this program, we can support communities in their efforts to address youth homelessness," stated HUD Agency Head, The Honorable Adrianne Todman. "Preventing and ending youth homelessness requires community effort, the support of our partners and providers, and resources dedicated to our youth."

This marks the ninth round of funding under YHDP. Previous grants have enabled recipients to collaborate with system partners such as child welfare, juvenile justice, and education sectors. Grantees have also developed innovative housing solutions like Host Homes, kinship care models, and permanent supportive housing for young people by involving them in program design.

"This program has been successful because it’s driven by the people who have expertise in addressing youth homelessness – youth and young adults who have been there themselves," said Marion McFadden, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development. "To date, HUD has awarded YHDP funding to 124 communities, representing over half a billion-dollar investment in preventing and ending youth homelessness."

Communities participating in YHDP must establish Youth Action Boards where young individuals with lived experience lead efforts to design, implement, and improve local programs aimed at ending youth homelessness.

Selected communities will receive intensive technical assistance to aid their planning and project implementation processes. This includes both individual and group learning opportunities available through materials on the HUD Exchange.

The deadline for Continuums of Care (CoCs) to apply for this funding is April 17, 2025.
