Perry JaQuan Jackson, a 26-year-old resident of Charleston, South Carolina, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison. This follows his guilty plea for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Court evidence revealed that on March 3, 2022, Jackson was apprehended at Northwoods Mall in North Charleston while wanted on state bench warrants for weapons and narcotics violations. Upon arrest, he informed officers about a gun under the driver’s seat of his vehicle. A search confirmed the presence of this gun, another firearm in the glovebox, marijuana, and cash. DNA tests later verified Jackson's DNA on the weapon found under the driver's seat. His criminal record includes multiple felony convictions and previous state weapon offenses.
United States District Judge David C. Norton handed down the sentence of seven years imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release. It is important to note that parole is not available in the federal system.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to strengthen PSN with core principles such as fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
The investigation involved cooperation among several agencies: the FBI Columbia Field Office, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, and North Charleston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Lietzow is responsible for prosecuting this case.
