Today, President Joe Biden announced that over 91,500 UNITE HERE workers and retirees will have their pension benefits safeguarded from anticipated future reductions. This protection is part of the American Rescue Plan.
President Biden emphasized the importance of these workers, describing them as "the unsung heroes of our economy" who serve many while they are away from home at airports and hotels. He stated that the newly approved benefits will ensure that the nation takes care of them in return.
"When Vice President Harris and I came into office, we promised to fight on behalf of workers to create an economy that grows from the middle out and the bottom up and to ensure a secure retirement for every American," Biden said. He highlighted the collaboration with Congressional Democrats to include the Butch Lewis Act in his American Rescue Plan.
The administration's efforts have so far provided security to over 1.3 million workers and retirees. Ultimately, it aims to restore or protect the earned retirement benefits of approximately 2 million Americans, ensuring they receive their full retirement benefits over the coming decades.
