The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) in collaboration with the National Football League (NFL) and NASCAR to raise awareness about online child sexual exploitation and abuse. The PSA, titled "It Only Takes 19 Seconds," highlights how quickly online interactions can become dangerous for children. It encourages parents and trusted adults to engage in conversations with young people about staying safe online.

Through its Know2Protect campaign, DHS aims to combat online child sexual exploitation by leveraging partnerships with professional sports leagues. NASCAR has aired the PSA at several Cup Series races, while the NFL Network is broadcasting it throughout the football season.

"Online child exploitation and abuse is one of the most heinous and urgent threats to our children," said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. He emphasized that preventing these crimes is central to DHS's mission, expressing gratitude towards NFL and NASCAR for their support in sharing educational resources with fans.

NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier stated, "Online conversations can turn dangerous in the blink of an eye," underscoring the importance of preparing children to protect themselves. Similarly, Tom Bryant, NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations, expressed pride in supporting the Know2Protect initiative which provides valuable resources to families nationwide.

Statistics indicate that one in five children receives unwanted sexual solicitations online each year. With increased technology use placing more children at risk, Know2Protect seeks to educate both children and adults on recognizing potential threats and reporting them.

Since its launch in April, DHS has collaborated with various organizations across sectors to disseminate awareness messages. The NFL and NASCAR have been instrumental as founding partners by using their platforms to highlight these dangers through PSAs and other resources.

Homeland Security Investigations special agents have engaged directly with parents and children at events like the NFL Flag Championship Series and NASCAR Yellawood 500 to provide safety tips. Additionally, outreach efforts include sharing digital safety series links through channels such as the NASCAR Kids Club newsletter.

Know2Protect represents a federal government effort focused on education and prevention regarding online CSEA. Through Project iGuardian—its official education arm—DHS offers presentations led by HSI special agents upon request from schools or community groups interested in learning more about protecting against this threat.

For those suspecting a child might be a victim of online CSEA or facing imminent danger due to abduction concerns are encouraged contact authorities via designated hotlines provided within campaign materials for immediate assistance.
