The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized three awards under the CHIPS Incentives Program’s Funding Opportunity for Commercial Fabrication Facilities. Corning, Edwards Vacuum, and Infinera are the recipients of these awards, receiving up to $32 million, $18 million, and $93 million in direct funding respectively. These funds will be disbursed as each company meets specific project milestones.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated, “The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act is a turning point for American innovation and manufacturing that is strengthening our economic and national security.” She emphasized the importance of semiconductors manufactured in the United States for technological and economic leadership.
Corning Incorporated Chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks expressed pride in contributing to strengthening the domestic semiconductor supply chain. He said, “This investment and our continued commitment in Canton will enable us to expand the next-generation manufacturing capabilities necessary for producing critical materials for lithography tools that create the world’s most advanced microchips.”
Infinera CEO David Heard remarked on finalizing their agreement to receive CHIPS Act funding. He stated, “This funding will accelerate delivery of U.S. photonic semiconductor innovations to meet the demands of critical network infrastructure in the era of AI.”
Additionally, an amended award provides GlobalFoundries with a supplemental award of up to $75 million in direct funding.
CHIPS for America has awarded over $33 billion out of more than $36 billion proposed incentives funding so far. This initiative aims to create over 125,000 jobs across 22 states. It is part of President Biden and Vice President Harris's plan to invest in America by stimulating private sector investment and creating jobs.
