Marion man sentenced for illegal firearm possession

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Marion, Iowa man has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for possessing firearms as a felon. Yasir Jinnah, 33, received his sentence following an August 2024 guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Jinnah admitted in a plea agreement that he possessed firearms on February 13 and March 31, 2023, and April 26, 2024. He was previously convicted of unlawful sale of a firearm in Illinois state court in May 2012, making him legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

During the years 2023 and 2024, Jinnah shared photos and videos on social media showing himself with firearms and marijuana. On February 13, 2023, after being stopped for a traffic violation on Interstate 80 by an Iowa State Patrol trooper, a search revealed a loaded Glock pistol and magazines in his car.

Subsequent searches at Jinnah's residences in Cedar Rapids and Marion uncovered multiple loaded firearms and ammunition. The items included Glock pistols, Beretta pistols, Smith & Wesson pistols, magazines with various rounds of ammunition, and a Maverick Arms shotgun.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Jinnah to serve 30 months' imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release. Federal sentences do not allow for parole.

Jinnah remains in the custody of the United States Marshal until his transfer to federal prison. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt prosecuted the case with investigations conducted by local police departments alongside federal agencies.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, the Department’s strategy focuses on building community trust and setting strategic enforcement priorities to curb violence effectively.
