A Canadian citizen has admitted guilt in a U.S. District Court in Bangor for illegally entering the United States from Canada and importing a controlled substance. The individual, Nathan Paul Curran-McQuade, was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Van Buren station in September 2024.
Court documents reveal that Curran-McQuade, aged 31, was stopped while riding an ATV on a trail near Caswell that is marked with international boundary signs. Upon his arrest, agents found him carrying approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine and marijuana stored in a mason jar within his backpack. He claimed his intention was to visit a store in Caswell for gas and stated that the drugs were intended for personal use.
For the charge related to the controlled substance, Curran-McQuade could face up to 20 years of imprisonment along with a fine reaching $1 million. Additionally, he may be sentenced to up to 180 days in jail and fined up to $5,000 for illegal border crossing. Any sentence imposed will include three years of supervised release following incarceration. A federal district judge will decide on the sentence after reviewing U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
