The Heritage Foundation has announced the appointment of Steve Chartan as vice president of government relations. Chartan brings a wealth of experience from his 15-year career in advancing conservative policies on Capitol Hill and in the private sector.
Chartan's congressional service spanned 12 years, during which he held senior roles with prominent conservative members. Most recently, he served as chief of staff to Senator Ted Cruz, where he was the senator's top advisor and led his official team. His work with Senator Cruz began in 2015 when he took on the role of legislative director. Before that, Chartan was the founding executive director of the House Freedom Caucus under Congressman Jim Jordan's chairmanship, serving as its lead legislative strategist.
His previous roles also include policy advisor for the Senate Steering Committee under Senators Mike Lee and Pat Toomey. Following his time in Congress, Chartan became a principal at AxAdvocacy, a firm specializing in government relations and strategic communications. He is an alumnus of Duke University.
Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts commented on Chartan's new role: "America has a golden opportunity in front of her – a chance to lead a national renewal grounded in the principles that made this nation great. With President Trump at the helm and conservatives leading Congress, we have the opportunity to restore the American dream for so many hard-working families across the country."
Roberts added: "Steve Chartan is an invaluable part of the conservative movement, and we are excited to have him here at Heritage. His experience and dedication will be instrumental in equipping lawmakers with research and policy expertise they need to craft legislation that puts the American people first."
Senator Ted Cruz praised Chartan's past contributions: "Steve was an exceptional chief of staff, a trusted top adviser, and a key member of my senior leadership team... I congratulate him and Heritage on this announcement."
Senator Mike Lee expressed confidence in Chartan's abilities: "I have known Steve Chartan for over a decade... He has been a steadfast ally in the fight for freedom in America."
Congressman Jim Jordan also welcomed Chartan’s appointment: "Steve Chartan is a seasoned strategist and principled conservative warrior... He will be a welcome addition to the Heritage team."
Chartan himself remarked on joining Heritage: "It is an honor to join Heritage at this pivotal time for our country... I look forward to working with experts and thought leaders at Heritage."
