Gucci store burglars sentenced to prison for Northwest D.C. theft

Husan Thurston and Alton Pernell, both residents of Washington, D.C., have been sentenced for their involvement in a burglary at a Gucci store in Northwest D.C. The incident occurred on September 9, 2024. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the sentences.

Thurston received a sentence of two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Pernell was sentenced to two years in prison with six months suspended, followed by three years of supervised release and one year of supervised probation. Both men pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary on November 19, 2024, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The government presented evidence showing that at approximately 11:00 p.m., law enforcement observed a group attempting to break into the Gucci store located on the 1000 block of I Street, NW. Surveillance footage captured Thurston and Pernell forcing entry into the store and taking handbags from display stands. Officers on site apprehended both men as they attempted to flee.

U.S. Attorney Martin and Chief Smith praised the efforts of those involved in investigating the case from MPD. They also recognized Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hannah Skopicki and Elizabeth Ginsburg for prosecuting the case.
