U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) alongside the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a vessel smuggling cocaine off the northern coast of Puerto Rico on January 22, 2025. The operation led to the seizure of 156 pounds (128 kilograms) of cocaine valued at approximately $2.6 million.

Christopher Hunter, Director of Air and Marine Operations in the Caribbean, stated: "This incident demonstrates the unwavering commitment of CBP Air and Marine Operations and our partners to safeguard Puerto Rico’s borders and protect our communities. This operation highlights the importance of our strategic partnerships and advanced technology in countering transnational criminal organizations that threaten the safety and security of our island."

The joint operation began with a routine patrol by a Coast Guard HC-144 aircraft that identified a twin-engine vessel about 50 miles north of Aguadilla, carrying visible occupants and packages suspected to be contraband. A CBP Maritime Enforcement Aircraft continued surveillance as the suspect vessel headed towards Puerto Rico.

A coordinated effort involving Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Doyle, an AMO Coastal Interceptor Vessel, and an AMO Blackhawk helicopter resulted in intercepting the suspect vessel approximately 13 miles north of Hatillo at around 23:37 local time. Four bales containing contraband were recovered from both water and vessel during this interception.

Four men from the Dominican Republic were apprehended in connection with this smuggling attempt. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) took custody for further investigation and prosecution.

Rebecca Gonzalez, Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations in San Juan, emphasized their commitment: "Our HSI agents are committed to thoroughly investigate the illegal entry of narcotics ensuring that every effort is made to disrupt any criminal activity and dismantle foreign organizations that threatens the safety of our communities."

AMO plays a crucial role by leveraging its aviation and maritime law enforcement expertise along with innovative capabilities across U.S territories including Puerto Rico, supported by approximately 1,800 federal agents equipped with aircrafts and marine vessels.
