A Lame Deer resident, Kendra Carol Cook, has pleaded guilty to assault charges following a rollover crash on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation that resulted in serious injuries to two passengers. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich announced the development.
Cook, 34, admitted guilt to two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. She faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison for each count, alongside a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
The case was overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Cavan, with sentencing scheduled before U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters at a later date. The court will consider various factors including the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines when determining her sentence. Cook remains detained pending further proceedings.
Court documents indicate that on May 18, 2023, the FBI received information about a vehicle driven by Cook rolling over north of Lame Deer while she was under the influence of alcohol. The incident left both Cook and her passengers injured. Witnesses reported finding two women at the scene who stated that Cook had fled after the crash.
One passenger identified as Jane Doe 2 was seated in the back, while another known as Jane Doe 1 was in front during the accident. It was reported that prior to picking up Doe 2, Cook mentioned consuming whiskey and continued drinking while driving towards Lame Deer with them.
Witness accounts describe erratic driving behavior from Cook who allegedly swerved across lanes intentionally before accelerating into a ditch causing multiple rollovers at speeds exceeding local limits where only 35 mph is permitted; no physical altercations were noted between parties involved according to Doe 1's testimony which confirmed there wasn't interference or fighting over control
