U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) and the U.S. Coast Guard have successfully intercepted a vessel smuggling 282 pounds of cocaine off the northern coast of Puerto Rico. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, led to the arrest of four men from the Dominican Republic and the seizure of narcotics valued at approximately $2.6 million.
Christopher Hunter, Director of Air and Marine Operations in the Caribbean, emphasized the significance of this operation: "This incident demonstrates the unwavering commitment of CBP Air and Marine Operations and our partners to safeguard Puerto Rico’s borders and protect our communities." He noted that strategic partnerships and advanced technology play crucial roles in countering transnational criminal organizations.
The interception began with a routine patrol by a Coast Guard HC-144 aircraft on January 22. The aircraft spotted a twin-engine vessel carrying visible packages suspected to be contraband about 50 miles north of Aguadilla. Surveillance was then continued by a CBP Maritime Enforcement Aircraft as the suspect vessel approached Puerto Rico.
A joint intercept was executed by Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Doyle, an AMO Coastal Interceptor Vessel, and an AMO Blackhawk helicopter at approximately 23:37 local time, 13 miles north of Hatillo. Four bales containing contraband were recovered during this operation.
Following their arrest, custody of the four individuals and seized contraband was transferred to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation and prosecution. Rebecca Gonzalez, Special Agent in Charge at HSI San Juan, reiterated their commitment: "Our HSI agents are committed to thoroughly investigate the illegal entry of narcotics ensuring that every effort is made to disrupt any criminal activity."
AMO plays a vital role in national security with its aviation and maritime law enforcement expertise across various regions including Puerto Rico. The organization operates with around 1,800 federal agents along with numerous aircraft and marine vessels throughout key areas.
