A Sanford man received a 10-year prison sentence in U.S. District Court in Portland for possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute. Nicholas Delahunt, aged 39, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen to 120 months of imprisonment, followed by eight years of supervised release.

Court records reveal that in October 2023, an officer from the Sanford Police Department observed a vehicle stopped on the roadside. Upon checking, it was found that the registered owner, Delahunt, had a suspended license and was driving the vehicle. During a conversation with Delahunt at the scene, the officer noticed a large plastic bag protruding from his sweatshirt pocket that seemed to contain narcotics. The bag contained approximately 166 grams of fentanyl. A further search uncovered an additional three grams of fentanyl on Delahunt's person. It is noteworthy that just two grams of fentanyl can be lethal.

Delahunt has prior convictions; he was convicted in Maine in 2021 for unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs.

The FBI led the investigation into this case with assistance from the Sanford Police Department.
