Mexican man dies after heat-related emergency following illegal border crossing

On July 7, 2024, Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) on all-terrain vehicles encountered a group of individuals crossing the border illegally near Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Among them was an unconscious Mexican man suffering from a heat-related medical emergency. BPAs attempted to lower his body temperature using water and ice and called for assistance from emergency medical services (EMS) and Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR).

A BORSTAR emergency medical technician arrived shortly after and continued providing aid. The man was moved to a nearby highway to expedite access to advanced medical care. Despite efforts by the Dona Ana Fire Department, no ambulance was initially available. An ambulance from Sunland Park Fire Department eventually transported the man to Hospitals of Providence - Transmountain Campus in El Paso, Texas.

Upon arrival at the hospital at approximately 7:01 p.m., doctors treated him for severe dehydration and heatstroke, admitting him to intensive care. Although Border Patrol initially established hospital watch, they later granted compassionate parole status due to his critical condition. Unfortunately, the man remained under medical care until he passed away on July 15, 2024.

CBP Office of Professional Responsibility Special Agents interviewed another member of the group who identified himself as the man's brother. He confirmed that they had crossed the border together with others and noted that his brother had not shown signs of illness before their journey began.

The El Paso Office of the Medical Examiner will not conduct an autopsy as the remains were taken out of its jurisdiction by family members. CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing this incident while notifying the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), America's largest law enforcement organization, continues its mission to protect national borders through various measures including innovation and collaboration.
