Telefónica Tech and IBM have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop security solutions addressing challenges posed by future quantum computers. The agreement focuses on creating technology that will protect data from potential vulnerabilities in a post-quantum world.
Quantum computing promises advanced calculations but poses risks to traditional encryption algorithms, which may become vulnerable. Though cryptographically relevant quantum computers are not yet available, data could be at risk of harvesting for future decryption by cybercriminals.
IBM has developed enterprise software focused on quantum-safe technologies as part of its holistic approach to anticipated quantum risks. These include the IBM Guardium Quantum Safe and other assets aimed at managing cryptography and addressing vulnerabilities.
The partnership with Telefónica Tech aims to combine IBM's technology with Telefónica's cybersecurity services expertise. Together, they plan to create solutions designed to protect critical data using new quantum-safe cryptography standards defined by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). IBM has co-developed two of the three algorithms published as post-quantum cryptography standards.
Raquel Ruiz Lozano, Global Head of Strategic Partnerships for Telefónica Tech, stated: "Quantum computing offers incredible opportunities, but it could also pose a significant challenge in terms of cybersecurity." She emphasized that this collaboration would help address potential post-quantum risks.
Adolfo Hernández Pulido, Technology Managing Director for Telefónica at IBM, highlighted the importance of transitioning to quantum-safe standards: "At IBM, we are proud not only to have had a hand in the development of new post-quantum cryptography algorithms but also to be leading the way with new quantum-safe technologies and services."
The integration of IBM's technologies into Telefónica Tech's portfolio is expected to enhance risk assessments performed by Telefónica professionals. The agreement also includes creating a joint use case office focusing on areas like communications encryption and adapting secure algorithms.
IBM infrastructure has already been deployed at Telefónica’s headquarters in Madrid as part of this initiative. This setup includes an IBM LinuxONE system secured with end-to-end encryption featuring new quantum-safe cryptography.
