United States Attorney Duane A. Evans has announced that Sonia Miller, a 54-year-old resident of New Orleans, has pled guilty to charges related to the theft of U.S. mail matter by a postal employee. The plea was entered on January 16, 2025.
Court documents reveal that on or about March 14, 2023, Miller unlawfully removed the contents from several parcels of mail entrusted to her during her employment with the postal service.
Miller is facing a potential maximum sentence of five years in prison. She could also be fined up to $250,000 and face up to five years of supervised release. Additionally, there is a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the United States Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution.
