Robert J. "Bob" Troester U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma
Abel Jose Farias, a 21-year-old resident of Oklahoma City, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and illegal possession of two firearms following a previous felony conviction. This announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.
The case began when a federal Grand Jury returned a four-count indictment against Farias on July 18, 2024. The charges included possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. According to public records, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents received information in December 2023 about an individual selling fentanyl pills. They arranged to meet the suspect at a gas station in Moore, Oklahoma, where they arrested Farias. In his vehicle, agents found fentanyl pills and a firearm. A subsequent search warrant executed at his residence led to the discovery of another firearm.
Farias pleaded guilty on November 13, 2024, to three counts from the indictment. He admitted possessing fentanyl intended for distribution and acknowledged having two firearms despite his felony convictions.
U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton handed down the sentence on January 28, 2024. Alongside the prison term, Farias will serve three years under supervised release post-incarceration. The court emphasized the serious nature of fentanyl-related offenses and noted that firearms had been involved in Farias's past convictions as well.
Public records indicate that Farias has prior felony convictions in Oklahoma County District Court for first-degree burglary (case number CF-2022-2403) and being a felon in possession of a firearm (case number CF-2022-1866).
This case was investigated by multiple agencies including Homeland Security Investigations, the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and the 21st District Attorney Criminal Investigations Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stan J. West prosecuted the case.
