Denton man receives 20-year sentence for role in fatal fentanyl overdose

Damien Diggs U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas

A Denton County man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in a fatal fentanyl overdose case. Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr. announced the sentencing of Courtney Green, aged 28, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant on January 30, 2025.

Green's co-defendant, Tiffane Chantial Volz, aged 37 and also from Denton, admitted guilt to the same charge and is set to be sentenced by Judge Mazzant on February 18, 2025.

Court documents revealed that law enforcement officers responded to an overdose death report on April 15, 2023, at Heatherton Drive in Celina, Texas. An autopsy concluded that the victim died from pulmonary congestion and edema due to fentanyl toxicity. Investigations uncovered communications between the victim and Green about distributing prescription pills. Further inquiries identified Volz as Green’s supplier.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued a Public Safety Alert highlighting the rise in lethal fake prescription pills containing fentanyl and methamphetamine. This alert aligns with DEA’s One Pill Can Kill Public Awareness Campaign aimed at educating the public about counterfeit pill dangers and encouraging Americans only to use medications prescribed by healthcare professionals and dispensed by licensed pharmacists.

This case was investigated by several agencies including the Celina Police Department, Denton County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew T. Johnson prosecuted the case.
