Mission man receives federal prison sentence for larceny

Alison J. Ramsdell U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota

A man from Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced to federal prison for larceny. The sentencing was announced by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell and took place on February 3, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte.

Preston White Feather, aged 28, received a sentence of one year in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and restitution amounting to $1,888.56.

White Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2024 and pleaded guilty on October 31, 2024. The conviction is related to an incident in December 2023 within the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation boundaries. On December 9, 2023, White Feather stole merchandise from a convenience store in Mission, South Dakota. His identification was confirmed through surveillance video leading to his apprehension by law enforcement.

The case fell under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act requiring certain violent crimes occurring in Indian Country to be prosecuted federally rather than at the state level.

The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services with Senior Litigation Counsel Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case.

Following his sentencing, White Feather was remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
