The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation is set to review S. 278, known as the Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA), on Wednesday. The proposed legislation aims to require companies to identify and remove users under the age of 13 from their platforms. Additionally, it seeks to prevent children under 13 from creating accounts and bans personalized recommendation systems for users under 17.
Matt Schruers, President & CEO of the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), expressed concerns about the bill's approach. He stated, "If the goal is to ensure younger users see content more appropriate for their age, the language in this bill creates significant additional risks that go against these broadly shared goals." Schruers suggests that a more effective strategy would involve collaboration with responsible companies that provide tools for parents to customize their children's online experiences.
