U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas have intercepted a significant quantity of narcotics, with an estimated street value of over $19 million. The drugs were discovered concealed within a shipment labeled as cucumbers and jalapeños.
Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry emphasized the importance of this operation, stating, "Our CBP officers don’t skip a beat when it comes to securing our border. This interception illustrates the important work CBP does to secure our border from harmful narcotics."
The discovery occurred on February 4 when CBP officers conducted an inspection of a tractor trailer entering from Mexico. The inspection process included non-intrusive equipment and canine screening. Officers found 26 packages of heroin weighing 7.53 pounds and 8,206 packages of methamphetamine weighing a total of 2,217.85 pounds hidden within the shipment.
Following the seizure, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents have begun a criminal investigation into the matter.
