Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida
U.S. District Judge Wendy Berger has sentenced Kyle Garrett Prevatt, a 24-year-old resident of Orange Park, to four years in federal prison for possessing firearms as a convicted felon. Prevatt pled guilty to the charges on November 5, 2024.
Court documents reveal that over five months, Prevatt sold several firearms to a confidential informant. The transactions involved nine firearms in total. Following the final sale, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Prevatt's vehicle. He fled in his truck but crashed into a ditch and then tried to escape on foot before being apprehended. A subsequent search of his truck uncovered additional firearms and ammunition.
Before these offenses, Prevatt had been convicted of two felonies: armed burglary of a dwelling structure or conveyance and unarmed burglary of an unoccupied structure in 2020. Federal law prohibits him from possessing firearms and ammunition due to these prior convictions.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Kelly S. Milliron and Kevin C. Frein prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy under PSN focusing on building trust within communities, supporting violence prevention initiatives, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
