Romanian national sentenced to federal prison for illegal U.S. reentry

Roger B. Handberg, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced Severin Bombu, a Romanian national, to 18 months in federal prison for illegal reentry into the United States. Bombu, who pleaded guilty on November 18, 2024, had been previously deported from the U.S. on three separate occasions.

Court documents reveal that Bombu is a citizen of Romania and was removed from the U.S. on November 16, 2018, December 20, 2023, and March 2, 2024. He returned voluntarily to the country and was arrested in Marion County on November 1, 2024, due to an outstanding grand theft warrant. Authorities noted that Bombu did not apply for or receive permission from either the Attorney General or the Secretary of Homeland Security to reenter.

The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg led the prosecution.
