Mason City man receives over two decades for drug distribution

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

Monroe Thompson, a 40-year-old resident of Mason City, has been sentenced to over 20 years in federal prison. This decision follows his guilty plea on August 28, 2024, for conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

The investigation uncovered that between May and August 2023, Thompson was involved in a drug distribution network based in Mason City, Iowa. He was implicated in distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl. Law enforcement sources revealed that he purchased methamphetamine from their operatives. A search warrant executed at his residence led officers to discover counterfeit M-30 pills containing fentanyl.

Thompson's criminal record is extensive, including multiple convictions across several states: possession of controlled substances, firearm possession by a felon, and assault causing serious injury in Iowa; absence from custody in Minnesota; controlled substances offenses and firearm possession in Illinois; as well as burglary and other charges in Wisconsin.

Judge Leonard T. Strand of the United States District Court sentenced Thompson to 262 months of imprisonment followed by a five-year supervised release term. The federal system does not offer parole options.

Currently held by the United States Marshal’s custody, Thompson awaits transfer to a federal prison facility.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons prosecuted the case.
