Felon sentenced to over nine years for Elizabeth City shooting involvement

A felon involved in a shooting incident in Elizabeth City has been sentenced to 115 months in prison for possession of ammunition by a felon. Jermel Trevon Williams, aged 30, pled guilty to the charge on November 22, 2024.

Court documents and other information revealed that on August 7, 2023, officers from the Elizabeth City Police Department responded to a shooting outside a downtown bar. Surveillance footage identified Williams and another individual discharging firearms. Officers found five 9mm shell casings and two .45 caliber shell casings at the scene.

On October 29, 2023, during a traffic stop by Raleigh Police Department officers for a window tint violation, Williams was found as a passenger in the vehicle. The search led to the discovery of a digital scale in the center console and a stolen 9mm handgun along with two baggies of marijuana under the front passenger seat where Williams had been sitting. He admitted ownership of these items. As a previously convicted felon, Williams is prohibited from possessing ammunition.

The conviction is part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), an initiative involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies aimed at addressing significant drivers of violent crime through strategic enforcement and coordination.

Daniel Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with ECPD and RPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Newby prosecuted the case.
