Michele Beckwith Acting U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California
Edgar Castro, a 40-year-old resident of Marysville, has been arrested and charged with assaulting a federal employee. Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith made the announcement following the arrest.
Court documents reveal that on September 9, 2024, Castro allegedly assaulted a United States Postal Service worker. The incident occurred while the postal worker was at a red stop light in Marysville, operating his delivery truck. According to reports, Castro pulled up alongside the postal vehicle and shouted an aggressive remark before exiting his own vehicle.
Castro is accused of approaching the driver's side of the postal truck, reaching through an open window, and striking the employee in the head and neck area. This action reportedly caused the employee's badge and lanyard to fall into the street. As the postal worker attempted to retrieve his badge, Castro allegedly struck him again in the face, resulting in a fractured nose.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted an investigation leading to these charges. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Nchekube Onyima is responsible for prosecuting this case.
If found guilty, Castro could face up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. However, any sentence would be determined by the court after considering statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines that account for various elements of each case. It is important to note that these charges are allegations at this stage; Castro remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
