The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will review cleanup efforts at five Superfund sites in Maine this year. These reviews are part of a legally mandated process to ensure that past remediation activities continue to protect public health and the environment.
Each site will undergo a Five-Year Review, and upon completion, the reports will be accessible on each site's EPA profile. The sites under review include Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, Pinette's Salvage Yard in Washburn, Saco Municipal Landfill in Saco, Brunswick Naval Air Station in Brunswick, and Loring Air Force Base in Limestone.
The Superfund program was established by Congress in 1980 to address hazardous waste sites across the United States. In New England alone, there are 123 Superfund sites.
The EPA aims to return these sites to productive use through comprehensive investigations and cleanups. More information about the Superfund program is available online.
