Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom has reported that the District of Rhode Island gathered $9,912,376.35 in criminal and civil actions during Fiscal Year 2024. Of this total, $774,398.92 was from criminal actions and $9,137,977 from civil actions.
The district also collaborated with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice components to collect an additional $19,261,980.72 in jointly pursued cases. From these efforts, $2,460.50 was collected in criminal actions and $19,259,520.22 in civil actions.
The responsibility for enforcing and collecting both civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S., as well as criminal debts owed to federal crime victims, falls on the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices alongside the department's litigating divisions. Defendants are required by law to pay restitution to victims of specific federal crimes who have suffered either physical injury or financial loss. While restitution goes directly to victims, funds from criminal fines and felony assessments are directed to the department’s Crime Victims Fund. This fund then distributes the collected amounts to federal and state victim compensation and assistance programs.
Furthermore, through asset forfeiture actions in FY 2024, the Rhode Island office collected $1,129,404 working with partner agencies and divisions. Assets forfeited are deposited into the Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund which is used for restoring funds to crime victims and various law enforcement purposes.
