The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $19.8 million in refunds to consumers affected by deceptive sales practices of Aqua Finance, a company specializing in household water treatment funding. This follows a lawsuit filed by the FTC in May 2024 against Aqua Finance, accusing its nationwide network of dealers of misleading consumers about financing terms for water filtering and softening products during door-to-door sales.
According to the complaint, these false claims resulted in unexpected debt and significant interest payments for consumers, while also affecting some individuals' ability to sell or refinance their homes. As part of a settlement with the FTC, Aqua Finance agreed to monitor its dealers closely and ensure clear disclosures are made to consumers. Additionally, the company committed to providing $23.6 million in debt relief alongside funds for refunds.
The FTC is sending checks to 29,653 impacted consumers who should cash them within 90 days as specified on the check. Consumers with questions regarding their payment can contact Epiq Systems at 888-884-8509 or visit the FTC website for more information about the refund process. The Commission emphasizes that it never requires payment or account information from individuals seeking refunds.
Interactive dashboards provided by the Commission offer a state-by-state breakdown of refunds in FTC cases. In 2024 alone, actions taken by the FTC resulted in over $285 million being refunded to consumers nationwide.
The Federal Trade Commission's mission includes promoting competition and protecting and educating consumers. The agency does not demand money, make threats, instruct money transfers, or promise prizes.
