An Arizona man, Olan Jumbo, has been sentenced to 75 months in prison following a fatal drunk driving incident on the Navajo Nation. The crash occurred in November 2022 and resulted in the death of Jane Doe and serious injuries to John Doe. Jumbo was charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Court documents indicate that on November 25, 2022, Jane Doe and John Doe were traveling from Colorado to Tse Bonito, NM when their vehicle broke down. Family members arrived to assist, towing the sedan with an SUV. As they traveled on Navajo Route 12, Jumbo crashed his truck into the back of the sedan while speeding and under the influence of alcohol.
Jumbo fled but was apprehended two days later. Investigations showed he was driving between 74-82 mph in a zone limited to 45 mph. Open containers of alcohol were found in his vehicle post-crash. He had prior convictions related to drunk driving.
Upon completing his prison term, Jumbo will face three years of supervised release.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office.
The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with support from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meg Tomlinson is handling prosecution.
