U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Progreso Port of Entry have intercepted nearly 50 pounds of cocaine in a recent operation. This significant seizure underscores CBP's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking at U.S. borders.
Port Director Jorge Galvan of the Progreso/Donna Port of Entry remarked on the operation, stating, "Our frontline officers continue to exercise great vigilance and dedication to keeping dangerous narcotics off of the streets of our communities. This seizure illustrates CBP’s commitment to advancing and prioritizing CBP’s border security mission."
The incident took place at the Progreso International Bridge when officers referred a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old female U.S. citizen from McAllen, Texas for further inspection. The secondary examination involved a non-intrusive inspection system and CBP canines, which led to the discovery of 20 packages containing 48 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $638,172.
Following the discovery, CBP seized both the narcotics and the vehicle involved. Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the driver and initiated a criminal investigation.
